2008 World Champion of Public Speaking

This past weekend was a difficult one for me.  As I mentioned in a previous post, this was the first time since 2001 that I've not been able to attend the Toastmasters International annual convention.  While there are many aspects of the convention that I missed (educational sessions, camaraderie with other Champs, getting to meet many new TMs), by far the things that I missed the most was being there to assist/reassure the contestants and to witness the World Championships of Public Speaking.

And of all of the ones to miss, this one was HISTORIC!!  The winner this year was from my home district (D50), and SHE was the first woman to win in 22 years and only the 4th woman overall.  I am bursting with pride to have LaShunda Rundles as my newest colleague.  YEAH LASHUNDA!!!

Because of the historic nature, LaShunda's victory is sure to send ripples through not only our district, but through the world of Toastmasters as a whole.  And I've been saying for years now that I'll be glad when another woman wins the title, so that I'll have a better answer when people ask me "when is another woman going to win", or "what does it take for woman to win".  Now I can say, "don't ask me....ask LaShunda".

I can't wait to take part in the celebration for LaShunda that I hope my district will put together!!!  YEAH LASHUNDA!!!

LaShunda rocked the house. A terrific message wrapped in theatrical excellence and a singing voice that brought the audience to the edge of their seats.

A deserving champion!

LaShunda did a phenomenal job up there. Covered the entire skill set, strong message, emotionally grabbed the crowd and did not let go. The cheer when she was announced for her contestant interview was huge, enough to communicate what the audience thought. My only regret is that I had to go on after her :-)
